Objectives: Burnout is defined as a stressful condition of human health care professionals, due to the unbalance of the high professional demand and the low emotional or physical resource to afford it. Such physicological condition mainly occurs in oncolgy health care professionals due to the bewildering and frightening experiences in the daily assistance of patients. The objective of our study, conducted at The Policlinic of Messina in 2003 (January- Febuary), is to evaluate the prevalence of burnout in the oncology staff, and the correlation with the emotion of anger in comparison to the medical staff from the ophthalmology department which normally presents a low prevalence of burnout as described in literature. For this purpose, anger and burnout have been assessed by using different instruments. Methods: Thirty-six subjects working in oncology department and 32 working in ophthalmology department (controls) have been examined by using the MBI (Maslach Burnout Inventory) and STAXI (State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory). Results: Subjects of the oncology group showed higher mean values in the MBI Emotive Exhaustion and Depersonalization scales with respect to controls (p<0.01). Correlation analysis showed that increasing levels of burnout were associated with higher levels of anger expressed towards the environment (AX/Ex: p<0.01) and loss of anger control (AX/Con: p<0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion anger, as a response to frustration, seems to be a feature constantly associated to the clinical expression of burnout, and should not to be underestimated in both theoretical and preventive contexts
