The K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) of a Cu(II) ion in NaOH solution (2 M) has been measured and compared with Cu(II) ions in aqueous solution. The spectra have been analyzed using multiple scattering theory. All spectral features have been interpreted in terms of one-electron transitions and the distance of axial ligands has been quantitatively determined byXANES. There is no need to invoke shake down or shake up effects at the Cu K-edge.

Abstract

The K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) of a Cu(II) ion in NaOH solution (2 M) has been measured and compared with Cu(II) ions in aqueous solution. The spectra have been analyzed using multiple scattering theory. All spectral features have been interpreted in terms of one-electron transitions and the distance of axial ligands has been quantitatively determined byXANES. There is no need to invoke shake down or shake up effects at the Cu K-edge.
