Il Liceo Ginnasio “Domenico Cotugno”, fondato nel 1816, oltre a rappresentare la più antica istituzione didattica della città si identifica , specialmente nelle sue origini, con l’evoluzione dei suoi studi superiori. Fin dai primi anni il Liceo fu dotato di un Gabinetto di Fisica dotato di moderni ed efficienti strumenti scientifici a cui si affiancavano un Gabinetto di Storia Naturale, con importanti collezioni naturalistiche, ed un efficiente laboratorio chimico. Nel quadro del riordino, dello studio e dell’auspicabile valorizzazione delle ricche raccolte scientifico/didattiche storiche dell'Istituto è stata analizzata la collezione Geo-Paleontologica che risulta costituita da una sezione mineralogica e da una paleontologica. La collezione mineralogica conta al 2004 circa 500 esemplari; la classificazione originale stabilita è quella tradizionale che segue la loro composizione chimica ed anche la modalità ostensiva segue questa logica. ad eccezione di sei pregevoli contenitori in vetro, di forma ogivale, contenenti campioni provenienti dai depositi evaporatici di Stassfurt. La collezione paleontologica conta circa 300 esemplari ed il suo nucleo è costituito da una raccolta didattica realizzata dalla ditta Krantz acquistata intorno al 1850; altri campioni risultano invece acquisiti da fornitori umbri e toscani. Di una certa importanza la raccolta di fossili provenienti dal circondario dell’Aquila che comprende anche resti di vertebrati.
The Liceo Gymnasium "Domenico Cotugno", founded in 1816, in addiction to represent the most ancient didactic institution in L’Aquila is identified, especially in its origins, with the evolution of advanced studies of the city. Since the first years of its foundation the Liceo was equipped of a modern Physics laboratory, with many efficient scientific instruments, of a Natural History Laboratory, with important naturalistic collections, and of a Chemical Laboratory. In the project of the reorganization, the study and the valorisation of the rich historical scientific/didactic collections of the Institute the Geo-Paleontological collection, constituted by a mineralogical and a paleontological section, has been analysed. The mineralogical collection counts (up 2004) approximately 500 specimens; the ancient traditional classification is based on the chemical composition of minerals and also the display modality follows this logic. To note six beautiful point shaped glass containers, displaying evaporitic salts coming from the famous locality of Stassfurt. The paleontological collection counts approximately 300 specimens and its core is constituted from one didactic collection, prepared by the Krantz company, acquired around to 1850; other items were acquired from suppliers from Umbria and Tuscany. Very important the collection of fossil specimens collected from L’Aquila surrounding which comprises also vertebrate remains.
