Introduction: In Italy, although the nursing students’ academic failure (rate 35-37%) represents a significant contribution to the already chronic nursing shortage, it is not well documented as in other countries. This phenomenon is becoming important for the university system because it represents a very good indicator of quality. The purpose of this paper is to document and discuss: a) the nature and the possible determinants of nursing students’ academic success or failure; b) the strategies to prevent the academic failure. Materials and Methods: A narrative review of the literature published in the last 15 years was conducted by consulting the Medline database. Results: With regard to academic success or failure, the literature has demonstrated a greater attention to the analysis of intrinsic characteristics of nursing students; rather than the study of organizational, political and professional factors and to the intervention strategies to contain avoidable failure. Conclusions: In addition to testing possible strategies to prevent academic failure of nursing students it needs to reach a shared definition of this concept in order to measure and systematically compare the results of research in this area. It will also needs to test and validate useful tools for early identification of students at risk of academic failure and also to define the strategies activated by students who, despite being at risk, complete successfully their studies.
