The effects of the 1915 earthquake in the city of Aquila: damages and restoration guidelines - About the 1915 earthquake damage in the Regional Capital many uncertainties still remain ; coeval bibliographical sources focus on the narrative of the major disasters occurred in the Marsica, but even at a later stage that topic is not subject of specific studies. Yet in the earthquake following decades extensive work was performed on some monumental buildings in the city, as well as significant demolitions in the urban area. The best known restoration is that of Santa Maria di Collemaggio, whose facade was partially demolished after the earthquake and later rebuilt with an internal frame in reinforced concrete, while the coating was reassembled with the numbered stone material coming from the breakdown. Unlike the conservation history of Collemaggio, which has recently been discovered, not so well-known are the events relating to other buildings, on which the historical-constructive analysis is partial or absent. Now the investigation is going on through the research of information about damaged historical buildings; after a verification of the existing literature, the analysis of archival sources provides valuable information on the real state of the damage and on some interventions performed in the decades following the earthquake. It follows a scenario of not very serious but widespread damage ( thin domes collapses and wall damages) causing not only need of timely repair works, but also relevant building and urban transformations after demolitions carried more by the will of renewal, than due to really irreparable damages.
