Despite it being physically inaccessible, musicians, and musicologists are well aware of the Carlo G MS. This article examines its contents, in particular the texts, in order to offer more solid hypotheses concerning its provenance, compiler, and dating. The proposed origin of the manuscript is in Bologna, in the context of some important convents. The hitherto unidentified “Carlo Gra…”, the compiler and main author, may be the Bolognese nobleman Carlo Grati. As for the dating, the manuscript may have been compiled in the 1610s or 1620s.
