For 20th century totalitarian regimes, vacation spots were a fundamental tool for building popular consensus. They were employed by Fascists in Italy, communists in the Soviet Union, and Nazis in Germany. The damnatio memoriae that swept away the more hateful symbols of these regimes spared them, but not degradation and improper transformations, which must be urgently dealt with.
