This essay focuses on "The Myth of the State", Ernst Cassirer’s last posthumously released book (1946). After outlining the author’s perspective on how modern myths relate to the 20th century, I examine Cassirer’s arguments regarding the crucial passage “from the cult of the hero to the cult of the totalitarian race” as well as his thoughts on the significance of using technical tools for a mythical structure of society. According to Cassirer, these two factors form the foundation for the significance and applicability of the idea of “political propaganda”, which was developing at the beginning of the 1920s.

Abstract

This essay focuses on "The Myth of the State", Ernst Cassirer’s last posthumously released book (1946). After outlining the author’s perspective on how modern myths relate to the 20th century, I examine Cassirer’s arguments regarding the crucial passage “from the cult of the hero to the cult of the totalitarian race” as well as his thoughts on the significance of using technical tools for a mythical structure of society. According to Cassirer, these two factors form the foundation for the significance and applicability of the idea of “political propaganda”, which was developing at the beginning of the 1920s.
