This Ph.D. Thesis focuses on the main features and narratives of the Underworld in the Greek literary tradition from the Archaic period to the late Classical age. In particular, the thesis aims at analysing the relationships among these representations by highlighting the analogies and the differences also as regard to the specific literary genres (epic poetry, lyric, drama, and platonic dialogue). From this point of view, the relevance of the geographical and topographical details (rivers, waterfalls, meadows etc.), as well as the narratological stylistic features, has been underlined as a meaningful and deserving element in the descriptions of the Greek Underworld. From the Homeric poetry to Plato’s myths of the ‘Beyond’, the Hades and the other places of the post mortem hence represent an interesting and worthy topic of research in the study of the Ancient Greek literature and its Nachleben.
