The essay seeks to analyse the relationship between literature and the invention of language in Appalachia in the 1930s. It concentrates on the shift from external to internal point of view and on its consequences for the literary access to dialect. Four novels are taken into consideration, by regional writers. Some motifs and motivations are analysed more closely.
