The aim of this study is to show, through the novel "Lacci", some traits peculiar to the narrative of Domenico Starnone: the scarce exploitability of the narrative material for large-scale consumption and the renunciation of the epic tone that would make the story paradigmatic of a historical period or a geographical context; but also the use of typifications and thematic elements constitutive of the 'bourgeois novel' that characterise the appeal of the works for the general public. The reflection, in "Lacci", around the twentieth-century theme of identity is put in relation to adaptability for the theatrical and cinematic stage, where character analysis is translated respectively in the monological voice of the protagonist and in the voice-off device.
