Giuseppe Pagano spoke of the Colonia IX maggio, near L'Aquila, as a "healthy and simple construction by Ettore Rossi, an excellent architect and hospital technician" (1937). Rossi's competence in the hospital sector had already been demonstrated by winning the competitions for the hospitals in Viterbo, Bolzano and Modena, of which, in the postwar period only the last one would be built, to be followed by those in various Italian cities: Verona, Vercelli, Como, Turin, Campobasso.
