The rediscovery today of the ancient transhumance routes (Tratturi) is certainly an added value for the territories of the Italian inland areas. Indeed, these could once again play an important role in the economies of the places crossed, as they did in past centuries. The construction of a new role based on the preservation of a cultural identity born around the ancient routes of transhumance and the places they cross, however, today needs a shared valorisation strategy that goes well beyond regional borders. In Abruzzo region, the extension to the municipalities of the “Piani Quadro Tratturo” (PQT) as instruments for enhancement and protection has not had the desired effects and many of the authorities crossed by the Tratturi today lack them. To this must be added the absence of a shared knowledge system, which leads to bureaucratic delays as well as initiatives by individual authorities that often do not go beyond the municipal boundary. The work presented shows how complex and intertwined the set of regulations governing the use of sheep-track land is today and also how wide and diversified is the panorama of urban planning situations affecting ancient routes of transhumance. Starting from the preliminary studies for the drafting of the PQT for the municipality of L’Aquila, the work wants to show how today GIS technologies can support the management of these soils and at the same time become the fulcrum for the implementation of shared platforms for the adoption of useful and effective valorisation strategies
