Abstract

The quadrifrons arch of Marcus Aurelius, heart of the ancient town, placed at the crossing between the cardo and the decumanus more on the North, becomes, for the claritas of which it is bearer, the figurative model of the urban junction of Arba’ Arsat. This one, sliding towards South, along the cardo, attests in the crossing with the second decumanus of which the roman Oea was equipped. It happens when the Muslim built-up area strengthens its trades with the hinterland on the West and South of the Medina. Shafts and drums of columns, with Corinthian capital, and a system of archivolts and covered ways identify this new ‘quadrifrons arch’. Its genesis, probably, precedes the Turkish dominion but, just for this, it consolidates its symbolic valence of urban center, until the late attesting of the houses of the Qaramanli dinasty (where, in 1838, died Yusuf Pascià), of Jusef Gurgi, a rich merchant of Tarabulus, and of Mohsen.
