Zoology Zoology developed as an independent discipline from the late eighteenth century throughout the nineteenth century. This chapter shows how the discipline became established in Europe thanks to the works of such leading naturalists as Georges Cuvier, Charles Darwin, Ernst Haeckel and was a major centre of scientific debate at the time. Both the internal and social aspects of the history of zoology are considered.
