The choice of a classification system is particularly relevant in the BIM for Asset Management, because it is crucial to arrange the data set in a logical way and comply the specific characteristics of heterogeneous components of the built environment. ISO 81346 is the standard selected by the technicians of the Gran Sasso National Laboratory for the BIM management of the entire National Institute for Nuclear Physics building asset and it was used in the framework of the research project PNRR Tecnodigit for the information modelling of the underground experiment Ion Beam Facility. Through the comparison of ISO 81346 with the most conventional classification systems and the description of the consequent arrangement of WBS and IFC files, the paper aims to describe the methodology used to integrate this uncommon standard for the information modelling of a special building, with the aim of enhancing continuous data sharing and flexible interoperability in the broader view of open BIM.
