Rifiuto o cimelio? Un contributo alla conoscenza e alla conservazione degli stucchi settecenteschi in Abruzzo

Il saggio affronta la storia, la percezione e la conservazione degli stucchi barocchi in Abruzzo, con particolare attenzione alle trasformazioni avvenute tra il XVII e il XVIII secolo, spesso in seguito a eventi sismici. L'autrice analizza come, nel secolo scorso, questi apparati decorativi siano stati oggetto di rimozioni e distruzioni motivate da pregiudizi culturali e da una visione selettiva della storia dell'arte, che privilegiava il ripristino di presunti "stati originari" delle architetture a scapito delle stratificazioni storiche. Il saggio sottolinea l'importanza di una nuova consapevolezza critica, che riconosce il valore storico, artistico e documentario degli stucchi barocchi, non solo come elementi decorativi ma anche come testimonianze delle stratificazioni costruttive legate alle tecniche antisismiche adottate nei restauri settecenteschi. Attraverso alcuni casi di studio, vengono illustrate le modalità di realizzazione degli stucchi, le tecniche esecutive, i materiali impiegati (principalmente malte a base di calce, con finiture a marmorino) e le problematiche conservative emerse dopo il sisma del 2009. Il contributo si conclude con una riflessione sulle attuali pratiche di restauro, evidenziando la necessità di interventi rispettosi dell'autenticità e della complessità storica degli edifici, evitando la riproduzione mimetica e la cancellazione delle tracce del tempo. Le indagini diagnostiche sui materiali, presentate in appendice, confermano la varietà e la qualità delle tecniche impiegate e offrono strumenti utili per la conservazione.

This essay examines the history, perception, and conservation of Baroque stuccoes in Abruzzo, focusing particularly on transformations that occurred between the 17th and 18th centuries, often in the wake of seismic events. The author analyzes how, during the last century, these decorative features were subjected to removal and destruction driven by cultural prejudices and a selective view of art history—one that prioritized restoring buildings to their supposed "original states" at the expense of their historical layering. The essay highlights the importance of a new critical awareness that recognizes the historical, artistic, and documentary value of Baroque stuccoes—viewing them not merely as decorative elements, but as evidence of the structural layering associated with the anti-seismic techniques employed during 18th-century restorations. Through specific case studies, the text illustrates the methods used to create the stuccoes, the execution techniques, the materials employed (primarily lime-based mortars with ‘marmorino’ finishes), and the conservation challenges that emerged following the 2009 earthquake. The study concludes with a reflection on current restoration practices, emphasizing the need for interventions that respect the authenticity and historical complexity of the buildings, while avoiding mimetic reproduction and the erasure of the traces of time. Diagnostic analyses of the materials, presented in the appendix, confirm the variety and quality of the techniques employed and offer valuable tools for conservation efforts.
