In the 20 th century, Italy held a prominent position in the global yarn production market. This was due to a combination of a long-standing tradition in the sector, which was deeply rooted in many parts of the country, and the adoption of new technologies that optimized the production process. While most hosiery factories were located in northern Italy, production facilities in the south were few and far between. This article describes a unique and significant case study: a hosiery factory built in Lanciano in the early 1920s. Its design reinterprets the model of a large suburban villa, comprising a series of courtyards with pavilions and a main building whose decorative features clearly demonstrate the desire to establish a connection with the town centre. The article also illustrates the results of two design proposals that combine restoration strategies to preserve the industrial heritage of the former shoe factory and regenerate the surrounding area, which is undergoing urban marginalization.
