The identification of operational protocols for the management of post-production scenarios of steel components from decommissioning buildings is one of the goals of the Project of Relevant National Interest, funded by Next Generation EU, "ST3P+L. Buildings and Circular Economy. Steel from production to post-production. Law and responsibility issues". To achieve this objective, the project has included a preliminary phase of knowledge of the Italy’s steel buildings heritage, necessary to identify the resources available for a reuse chain activation. By means of a taxonomic classification of steel constructions built from 1950 to the present, merged into a repertoire created in the form of a database, this contribution aims to highlight the characteristics of existing structures, built both according to traditional and industrialized construction systems, and the types of recurring components, with a view to reuse/repurpose. The analysis of the general and technical aspects of the collected data has allowed to develop protocols suited to the Italian context and to create a pre-deconstruction audit model useful for a preliminary reusability assessment, making the reuse strategy increasingly attractive in the construction sector.
