Abstract

Local cultural and environmental heritage can become an instrument of critical literacy in terms of social and cultural communication and participation in terms of symbolic repertoires, which represent, in most cases, living realities that characterise a certain vision of life, thoughts, behaviours and attitudes of those who express them and within which portraits of the people and communities to which they refer are constructed. In all its material and immaterial meanings, local cultural and environmental heritage is the creator of epistemological and territorial alphabets, which, for various reasons, are able to re-establish and infiltrate knowledge and strengthen the cultural profiles of the population also in terms of resilience. Dealing with difficulties (as in the case of L’Aquila), also combining the discourse of cultural democracy, which is social, cultural and political (active citizenship), with an individual and collective heritage that is born, it can grow and be consolidated in the light of participation. Therefore, the goods and resources of the territory are transformed into alphabetical tools when positive conditions for the use of quality are created and the needs of individuals and the community mature in a process of cultural promotion in which the development of the literacy skills of each one is favoured. Civic expansion of the person takes place, also with regard to the cognitive universes that surround them, the messages that affect the and the most varied and complex languages.
