The contribution focuses on the citizenship competences from the perspective of the historical analysis, as well as their cultural and social values assumed over time in the Italian context. The attention that Italy have gradually paid to this kind of competences intertwines with the democratic principles and those sociopolitical strategies that represent the foundations of those societies where solidarity, participation and collaboration become vital elements of the individual’s well-being. The contribution starts from the Maastricht Treaty of 1992, then follows the development of the European citizenship concept as a common value of the member countries and its relevance at the educational level.
